Activities

Each child has the opportunity to experience many different kinds of activities during their camping week. Here are just a few examples:

Opening and Closing Campfires

Each camping session begins and ends with a ceremonial campfire. During the opening campfire, staff members tell stories and perform skits to welcome and entertain the campers. The closing campfire features the campers performing the skits, as well as an awards ceremony for various phases of the camping program. Every child receives an award for his or her achievements -- there are no losers at Copper Cannon.

Nature Studies

Copper Cannon has miles of nature trails on its property. Campers utilize these trails and other camp and local resources to learn about native plants, animals, and geology. Hands-on projects, games, and special activities help each child understand more about the natural world around them.

Ropes Course and Climbing Wall

Throughout the week, several activities are planned to develop and encourage personal skills and teamwork. The low-levels ropes course and climbing wall are two such activities. Through cooperation, teamwork, and encouragement, each child is personally challenged to complete the activities according to their capabilities.

Conservation Projects

As part of Copper Cannon's educational goals, the children can become involved in various conservation projects which benefit the camp or local area.

Arts and Crafts

The Arts and Crafts building introduces campers to many hands-on activities. Campers' creativity and individuality are nurtured using a variety of materials such as beads, twine, pine cones, leather, and others. Each child leaves camp with their own special creation to remember the week.

Field Trips

During the course of the week, campers have the opportunity for at least one field trip. This trip could be to Echo Lake for a picnic and swim, a hike along the Appalachian Trail, or a visit to other local destinations.

Hiking and Sports

There are many opportunities for children to participate in physical activities. On-site camp facilities include softball, soccer, basketball, archery, volleyball, and hiking trails.

Unique Activities

In addition to the usual summer camp activities, Copper Cannon has several other activities that are fun and educational at the same time, teaching valuable problemsolving, teamwork, and organizational skills. Examples include the Popcorn Relay, Comet, The Stump, and On Top of the World. Through these activities, the children develop a sense of accomplishment, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction.
