AUCTION, AUCTION, AUCTION "An eleven year old child who needs camp doesn't care about the economy." The kids were the big winner at the 38th annual Copper Cannon Auction! Copper Cannon campers and volunteers helped make this auction a great success. As one camper put it, "It is a chance for us to help Copper Cannon raise money for me to be able to go to camp". Volunteers saw a huge turnout with over 280 people gathering at the Littleton Elks Lodge to support Copper Cannon Camp. This year’s auction was dedicated to Maurice Doyon who passed away last year. Maurice spent ten years as the Copper Cannon chairman of the board. He and his wife Cecile were the auction chairs for thirteen years raising thousands of dollars to help New Hampshire youth attend Copper Cannon Camp.
Summer campers from throughout the area volunteered Saturday night to help make the event a success. Working with Rachel Houston, who has helped at all 38 auctions, campers sold penny auction tickets, bussed tables and displayed the various merchandise up for auction.
The evening began with wine tasting from Horizon Beverage and a delicious buffet dinner of turkey, roast beef and fish prepared by James "Pepper" Enderson from the Littleton Elks and Mike Valcourt. For a third year in a row, a camper’s grandfather drove two and a half hours north with a moose pot roast to share at the buffet dinner. It was his way of thanking Copper Cannon supporters for allowing his grandson to attend camp.
The Twin State Woodturners took advantage of what Mother Nature provided when a windstorm toppled a Black Cherry tree at Copper Cannon. Twin State’s goal was to use the tree to create bowls and other items to donate to Copper Cannon’s annual fundraising auction. Over the next ten months, club members took pieces of the cherry tree home to create one of a kind bowls and tops.
Thanks to the tremendous effort of many supporters, over $45,000 was raised through this event. In turn, it will help fund scholarships to 80 under-served New Hampshire youth. Copper Cannon has the unique distinction of being one of the few summer camps in the country that provides a free camp experience to low income children. Last summer, over thirty children from the Littleton, Bethlehem, Franconia area had a chance spend a week at Copper Cannon Camp.
